Feb 09 | April 09 | May 09 | July 09 | August 09 | May 10 | June 10 8:35 PM 02/08/2009 - The Heritage FestivalWe went to the Heritage Festival today. There were around 60 tents, each representing a different country. I have been every year since I've been living in Canada and always love it. This year I was a little disappointed though because it seems that the owners of some of the tents have caught on to how much of a profit they can make. I think a good example would be a list of what I bought in the England tent:
None of these were large sizes, just regular. When I think of England, I know that you will pay: no more than about $1.50 for a can of pop (it was actually written on the can "69p"); up to $2 for one single sausage roll; about $1 for a packet of crisps; and about $1 for a small chocolate bar. The total of that is about $5.50, and at the festival I had to pay double that. Sure you can take in to account the fact that the food is imported... but even then the sausage roll wouldn't have been. It was the same type of setup at all of the tents... paying crazy prices just because you think you're getting something that you can't get anywhere else. Meanwhile you're oblivious to the fact that the owner of the tent is making a huge killing and laughing their way to the bank. I have no problem with paying a little extra for something harder to find, but to this extent, I just feel it's plain greed. Other than the sudden rise in prices, it was a very enjoyable day. It started to rain heavily at one point but it did not last long. I think I have a bit of tan coming because my cheeks are rosey red from the sun! One thing that I enjoy looking at in some tents is the information on inventors from that country. I had no idea that Nikola Tesla was from Austria! I also didn't know that the USB Pen was first made in Singapore. I think next time we visit I will pay even more attention to that information and see what else I can find out. There were so many dancers from different countries on the stages. It's amazing how there can be so many dances that are native to so many countries. It's actually made me think about sometime taking on a dance course in one country's native dance. I'm not really sure which but it just seems like it would be fun and very entertaining! It would be a nice change from the pop songs I dance to in Dance Dance Revolution any way. |
